SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba freshman Gianna Pezzulo (Henniker, N.C./Cushing Academy) scored four goals to pace the women’s lacrosse team to a 12-9 win over visiting UVA Wise on Sunday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.  The Catawba Indians improve to 3-2, while the Cavaliers fall to 3-1.

Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) and Katie Barth (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) scored in the first three and half minutes to give Catawba a 2-0 lead in a game it would never trail.  The Cavaliers pulled within a goal four times in the opening half before trailing 6-4 at the break.

Pezzulo scored inside the final minute of the half to give the Lady Indians their two-goal margin then Nicole Hunt (Pleasant Garden, N.C./SW Guilford) and Kruse added early goals for an 8-4 edge to open the final 30 minutes.  Goals by Jesse French and Rachel Cole cut Catawba’s lead to 9-7 midway through the second half, but Hunt and Brooke Applebaum (Greensboro, N.C./SE Guilford) answered to restore an 11-7 lead with 9:59 to go.

The Cavaliers got back within two goals with just over three minutes left, but Catawba controlled possession for most of the final three minutes.  Pezzulo iced the game on her final goal with 1:38 remaining.

Catawba got two goals each from Kruse, Barth, Hunt and Applebaum.  Catawba caused 15 turnovers with Barth and Hannah Scott (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne’s County) each with three.  Scott won four draw controls and four ground balls.  Madison Anslemo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) made a dozen saves.

Hannah Marshall tallied three goals for UVA Wise.  French and Rachel Cole each scored twice.  Melanie Reilly recorded 11 saves.

Statistically, the game was even.  UVA Wise had a 30-28 edge in shots and a 21-20 advantage in ground balls.  The Cavaliers had one more turnover than Catawba.  UVAW won 14 of the 23 draw controls with Catawba have an edge on clears, getting it out of its defense end 17 of 22 times to 13 off 22 for the Cavaliers.

Catawba is back in action on Monday, hosting Charleston, W.V., at 4 pm.
