Softball Drops Final Two Games at CSU Classic on Sunday
COLUMBUS, Ga. – Catawba fell to Barry and Columbus State on Sunday in the final day of the CSU Classic softball tournament at Cougar Field on the campus of Columbus State University. The Catawba Indians dropped a 6-1 decision to Barry then fell 2-0 to host Columbus State. Catawba is 6-19 on the year. Barry moved to 7-11 and Columbus State 11-11-1.
Barry to a 4-0 lead in Sunday morning’s contest after Kristina Osorio’s three-run homer in the third. The Lady Indians had scoring chances, but left 12 on base in the loss. Taylor Martin (Salisbury, N.C./W. Rowan) scored the lone run as she doubled with one out in the sixth and later scored on an error.
Martin had two of Catawba’s six hits. Barry got hits from only three players, but Cheyanne Head was 4-for-4, Osorio went 3-for-4 with four RBI and Lynsey Duncan was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI.
Columbus State scored twice in the first inning and made it hold up as Darby Demarest and Harley Dawson combined on a two-hit shutout. A one-out error and a single put two runners on. An error plated one run and the second scored on a sacrifice bunt.
Brooke Walser (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) took the loss and fell to 4-6 despite not allowing an earned run. The Cougars had only two baserunners after the opening inning. Walser gave up just two hits over the six innings with four strikeouts. Martin and Delane Smith (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest) had Catawba’s hits.
Catawba will travel to Georgia College for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 2 pm.
