Women's Lacrosse Tops Charleston Behind Kruse's Seven Goals

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba dominated the second half in rallying for a 16-13 win over visiting Charleston in women’s lacrosse action on Monday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.  The Catawba Indians move to 4-2 on the year, while the Golden Eagles fall to 1-5.

Catawba trailed 11-9 at the half, but kept Charleston from scoring again until the final two minutes of the game.  Meanwhile, the Lady Indians seven unanswered goals to go on top 16-11.

The Lady Indians scored quickly to regain a lead in the final half.  Nicolette Salay (Columbus, N.J./N. Burlington Regional) tallied 24 seconds into the half and Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) tied it at the 26:57 mark.  A minute later Salay put in her second and Catawba was up to stay.

Catawba built an 8-6 lead midway through the first half before Charleston controlled the final 10 minutes.  Nicole Purcell, Shawna Kleinfelter, Megan Sheesley and Aryanna Jones scored in a three and half minute span that gave the Golden Eagles a 10-8 lead at the 6:08 mark of the half.

Kruse led Catawba with seven goals, one shy of the school record.  Gianna Pezzulo (Henniker, N.C./Cushing Academy) had five goals, handed out four assists and won five draw controls.  Salay had two goals, while Katie Barth (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) had a goal and three assists.

Aryanna Jones scored four goals for the Golden Eagles.  Samantha Jones picked up three goals with five draw controls.  Purcell and Sheesley both scored a pair of goals.

Catawba held a 26-24 edge in shots and held Charleston to just seven shots in the second half.  The Lady Indians also helped cause 14 of the 21 Golden Eagle turnovers in the final 30 minutes.

Catawba hosts Lincoln Memorial in conference action on Saturday at noon.
