Hewitt helps Volleyball to win over NewberrySALISBURY, NC – Catawba College out-lasted visiting Newberry, winning in five games, in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday morning at Goodman Gym. Catawba rallied from 2-1 down, winning by the scores of 30-25, 25-30, 26-30, 30-18 and 15-13. Catawba improves to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 3-11 and 0-3. Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) posted 22 kills and added five blocks to help lead Catawba. Early in the opening game, Hewitt posted three straight kills to put Catawba up 12-10. Later in the game, Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) had two kills and an ace to give Catawba an 18-17 edge. Newberry took the lead at 23-21 on two kills by Amanda Van Pelt (Linville, NC) and one by Layne Williams (Miami, FL). A Hewitt kill and back-to-back aces by Gretchan Sheffield (Lexington, NC) put Catawba back up 24-23. After Newberry tied the game, Catawba got a kill and a block by Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC) to lead 27-24. Catawba would score the final three points of the game. Newberry jumped out to a 24-16 in the second game before Catawba rallied reeled off nine of 11 points to draw within 26-25. A kill by Van Pelt and three errors helped Newberry even the match. Catawba led 20-18 in the third game, but a pair of blocks by Williams allowed Newberry to take a 22-21 lead. A kill by Harrison put Catawba up 26-25, but kills by Aubrey Mosley (Irmo, SC) and Williams led to five straight points by Newberry. The game ended on an ace by Kristin Pulone (Diamond Bar, CA). Catawba roared out to a 25-10 lead in the fourth game as Sheffield had four kills and an ace in the game, while Hawkins added six kills and a block. Pulone had four kills and an ace for Newberry. In the deciding fifth game, Catawba fell down 2-0, but responded after two kills by Hawkins to lead 5-4. Newberry grabbed an 8-7 lead after kills by Williams and Jessica Lipsi (Columbia, SC). Catawba scored three straight point to lead 10-8 and got three straight kills by Hewitt to post a 13-9 edge. Newberry scored three straight, one on an ace by Mosley, to close within 13-12. Hewitt had a kill to give Catawba a 14-12 lead, but Katie Stone (Greenville, SC) staved off the first match point with a kill for Newberry. Hawkins would convert a kill on the next point to end the match. Hawkins followed Hewitt with 17 kills and three blocks for Catawba, while Harrison and Sheffield each recorded 10 kills. Sheffield added 10 digs and four aces. Nicole Scheidt (China Grove, NC) had 63 assists, 10 digs and four blocks. Newberry got 19 kills from Williams and 14 from Van Pelt. Mosley had 43 assists and 19 digs.
