Baseball Falls to Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Florida Tech rode a five run first inning to a 10-6 win over visiting Catawba in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Seminick Field.  The Panthers improve to 13-5, while the 22nd-ranked Catawba Indians fall to an identical 13-5.

With one out in the first, Florida Tech strung together four straight singles and a hit batter to plate two runs and leave the bases loaded.  With two outs, James Gronberg singled home two more and Trent Masih singled home the final run before the inning would end.

Catawba closed the gap in the fifth as Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) doubled home a run and Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) had a RBI single.  A Jeremy Simpson (Cleveland, N.C./W. Rowan) squeeze bunt brought the Indians within 5-3.  Florida Tech got those three runs back in the bottom half the fifth.

Catawba crept back within two as Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) homered in the sixth and Hanes hit a two-run shot in the seventh to make it 8-6.  Florida Tech got solo homers from John Sternagel and Grant McKown in the eighth for the final margin.

Catawba got hits from only three players.  Smith and Fowler each had three hits and Hanes had two.  McKown had three hits for Florida Tech and Gronberg drove in three runs.

Catawba will face Saint Leo on Wednesday at 6 pm.
