Cook Pitches Softball to Split With Southern Wesleyan
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba and visiting Southern Wesleyan split a softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Warriors took the opener 15-7, while the Catawba Indians fought back to take game two 8-1. The Lady Indians end an eight-game losing streak and improve to 7-22. Southern Wesleyan stands at 4-16.
Catawba broke open a close second game with a four-run third. Grace Holland (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) doubled home two runs and Ashley Wagoner (Roaring River, N.C./E. Wilkes) singled home a run. Monica Taylor (Weaverville, N.C./N. Buncombe/UNCW) capped the inning with a RBI double.
Kaylee Cook (Kannapolis, N.C./Brown) hurled a complete game to improve to 2-9. She allowed just one run on seven hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Catawba banged out 11 hits with Holland, Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) and Taylor Martin (Salisbury, N.C./W. Rowan) all collecting two.
Southern Wesleyan scored 11 runs over the final three innings of the opener to pull away. Lizzie Fela hit a pair of homers among her four hits and drove in six. Sara Sweatt had four hits and also homered.
Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy) had a pair of home runs in a losing effort for Catawba and collected four RBI. Stinnard and Leah Higgins (Hope Mills, N.C./Gray’s Creek) also had two hits.
Catawba travels to Brevard next Saturday to open conference play with a 1 pm doubleheader.
