Wallace sets rushing record as Football gets win at 14th-ranked Fayetteville St.

FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- In a game that was not decided until the final minute, eighth-ranked Catawba College came away with a hard-fought 17-14 decision against 14th-ranked Fayetteville State in football action on Saturday night at Jeralds Stadium. Catawba improves to 3-0, while the Broncos fall to 2-1. A fumble on a sack with 39 seconds remaining gave Catawba the final defensive stop in a game that saw neither team lead by more than a single score. The Indians marched into scoring position on their first possession as Luke Samples (Elkin, NC) and Corey Ready (Aiken, SC) hooked up on consecutive pass plays of 37 and 28 yards to put the ball on the Bronco 21. After moving to the nine, Samples fumbled on a handoff and Fayetteville dodged the early chance. The Broncos would take their opening possession 82 yards in seven plays, culminating with a 31 yards pass from Duane Taylor to Daryl Bright to put the hosts ahead 7-0 with 7:57 remaining in the opening quarter. Ready would return the ensuing kickoff 70 yards to set up a Allan Rohrbaugh (Lexington, NC) 32-yard field goal to trim the lead to 7-3 at the 6:46 mark of the opening quarter. Neither team could mount a drive until the Indians drove to the Fayetteville 20 with six minutes left in the half, but Rohrbaugh had a 37-yard field goal attempt blocked. Fayetteville would drive to midfield, but LaQuane Talley (Charlotte, NC) came up with the big play of the half as he intercepted Taylor at the Tribe 24 and returned it 59 yards to the Bronco 17. Three Wallace runs later the Tribe took a 10-7 lead with just 20 seconds before the break. Fayetteville State would regain the lead with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. Andregus Holmes completed a halfback pass to Waym Westbrooks to the Tribe one and DeAngelo Bridgers scored on the next play for a 14-10 lead. Catawba answered right back, driving 80 yards for the eventual game-winning score. Samples and Ready connected for 37 yards, while John Vernon’s (Walnut Cove, NC) 17 yards reception on a third-and-six kept the drive alive. Wallace ran 27 yards to the two-yard-line and he would score his second touchdown two plays later with 20 seconds left in the third quarter. Ross McKernan had a 47-yard field goal try early in the fourth quarter hit the upright and Catawba drove inside the Bronco 20, but Mario Crowe (Charlotte, NC) fumbled at the 10. Catawba would get the ball back and again march to the FSU 10, but the Indians were denied on fourth down with 4:06 left. Two personal foul penalties against Catawba moved the ball to the Fayetteville 40, but the defense held and forced a punt with 3:09 remaining. A key 22 yard run by Crowe and a late hit penalty moved the ball into Fayetteville territory and Pat Huskins (Hillsborough, NC) pinned the Broncos at the 13-yard line with just 1:17 to play. After a pass interference penalty, the Indians recorded the sack and forced a fumble with 39 seconds left to end the game. Crowe led the Tribe ground attack with a career-high 111 yards on 12 carries. Wallace added 87 yards and became the school’s all-time leading rusher early in the third quarter. Catawba totaled 230 yards on the ground to 132 for Fayetteville. Samples was 11-of-20 for 188 yards, while Ready had 124 yards on four catches. Fayetteville added 219 through the air. Dustin Cox (High Point, NC) recorded 13 tackles on defense with three for losses and a pair of pass breakups. Khanis Hubbard (Raleigh, NC) made seven stops with a sack and three total stops for losses. #####
