Women's Lacrosse Stays Perfect in OT on Another Salay Winner

SALISBURY, N.C. -- For the second straight game, Nicolette Salay (Columbus, N.J./N. Burlington Regional) scored a late game-winner, this time in overtime, lifting Catawba to a 12-11 win over visiting Pfeiffer in women’s lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.  The Catawba Indians improve to 6-2 overall, while the Falcons fall to 5-3.

Pfeiffer won the draw control to start overtime, but quickly turned the ball over.  Catawba was able to clear into its offensive end and after holding possession for over a minute, Salay took a pass from Nicole Hunt (Pleasant Garden, N.C./SE Guilford) in front of the goal and scored the winner with 1:19 left in the period.

Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) and Gianna Pezzulo (Henneker, N.H/Cushing Academy) each scored three goals for Catawba with Kruse adding two assists.  Salay scored twice with an assist.

Ally Unkenholz and Molly O’Friel scored four goals for Pfeiffer.  Josie Lent had two goals and Meagan Bourque had a goal and an assist.  Sam Hanlon stopped nine shots in goal.

Catawba had pulled out to a 10-8 lead with 19:25 remaining before Pfeiffer, as it did all day, matched the two goal Catawba run with goals from O’Friel and Unkenholz to pull even with 9:16 to go.  O’Friel gave the Falcons their first lead with 6:04 to play.

Katie Barth (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) won the ensuing draw control and found Kruse alone behind the defense with an answering goal 10 seconds later.  Pfeiffer had a pair of late chances to go back in front, but O’Friel’s shot with 2:06 left was saved by Madison Anselmo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and Unkenholz shot wide with 46 seconds to go.

Gracie Wolfman (Georgetown, Texas/Georgetown) scooped up the ground ball after the miss and Catawba was able to clear.  Brooke Applebaum (Greensboro, N.C./SE Guilford) drew a Pfeiffer foul and a free position shot with 11 seconds remaining, but her shot was high and the game went to extra time.

Catawba had jumped to a 4-1 lead after 10 minutes and led 5-1 before Pfeiffer reeled off four straight to tie.  The Lady Indians picked up three goals for an 8-5 edge then Pfeiffer closed the half with two goals and oscored ne to start the second to knot the game at 8-8.

The Lady Indians also got goals from Barth, Becky Frost (Crofton, Md./Arundel), Jillian Kurolvech (Clarkston, Md./Clarkston) and Imani Grays (Greensboro, N.C./SE Guilford).  Catawba improved to 6-0 all-time in overtime games.  The Lady Indians beat Pfeiffer by the same 12-11 score in overtime last season.

Catawba hosts Edinboro on Friday at 3 pm.
