Women's Lacrosse Notches Fifth Straight Win

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba won for the fifth straight time, topping visiting Edinboro 10-8 in women’s lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.  The Catawba Indians improve to 7-2 overall, while the Fighting Scots fall to 1-3.

Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) scored three goals for the Lady Indians.  Gianna Pezzulo (Henneker, N.H/Cushing Academy) and Nicole Hunt (Pleasant Garden, N.C./SE Guilford) each scored twice.  Madison Anselmo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) recorded a dozen saves.

Catawba scored the opening two goals, but Edinboro took a 4-3 lead at the half on Olivia Potts’ goal with just four seconds to go before the break.  The Lady Indians were back on top just over five minutes into the second half as Pezzulo and Kruse scored 1:10 apart for the 5-4 lead.

Edinboro responded behind Emily Peters as she scored a pair of goals in just over a minute to put the Fighting Scots on top 6-5.  Pezzulo tied it with 14:07 left which started a 5-0 run by the Lady Indians.  Lexie Stavac (Chesterfield, Va./James River/Gardner-Webb) scored her first career goal and Hunt tallied back-to-back for a 9-6 edge with 7:56 left.  Kruse ended the run with 3:20 remaining.

Peters tried to bring Edinboro back.  She scored at the 2:50 mark and again with 1:25 left to cut the margin to 10-8.  Peters won the ensuing draw control, but Becky Frost (Crofton, Md./Arundel) knocked the ball from Peters as she headed to goal for a key turnover.  Imani Grays (Greensboro, N.C./SE Guilford) and Hannah Scott (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne’s County) also caused turnovers in the final minute.

Peters scored five goals for Edinboro.  Sidney Dobbins handed out three assists and Paige Skinner made 10 saves.

Scott caused four turnovers in the game and won three draw controls.  Frost caused three turnovers and scooped up six ground balls.

Catawba travels to Tusculum next Saturday for a noon conference match with the Pioneers.
