Lynch Nets Five Goals as Men's Lacrosse Powers Past Mars Hill
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Liam Lynch (Marietta, Ga./Pope) scored five goals as Catawba rolled to a 14-5 win over visiting Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Lions fall to 2-4 and 0-3.
Nathan Stewart gave Mars Hill a 1-0 lead just a minute and half into the contest and the Lions were tied with Catawba at 2-2 after a quarter. Cole Fanzo (Crofton, Md./S. River) opened the second quarter with consecutive goals that started a 10-0 run for the Indians.
Fanzo and Lynch combined for six straight Catawba goals to put the Indians ahead 8-2 just 30 seconds into the third quarter. Dalton Cook (St. Augustine, Fla./Bartram Trail) added back-to-back goals midway through the third and Lynch capped the run with four minutes left in the frame.
Catawba outshot Mars Hill 42-32 in the game which included a 27-15 margin during the middle two quarters that saw the Indians enjoy the 10-0 run. Catawba went 2-for-5 on man-up situations while holding the Lions scoreless in four extra-man opportunities which all came in the final quarter.
Fanzo had three goals for Catawba, while Cook had two goals and an assist. Lynch had an assist to go with his five goals. Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) notched 13 saves, while also assisting on a goal.
Catawba travels to Tusculum next Saturday for a 7 pm face-off with the Pioneers.
