SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba was swept by visiting Newberry in South Atlantic Conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Wolves won by the scores of 6-0 and 11-4 in improving to 21-8 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 9-24 and 2-2.
Newberry took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the opener as Rachel Marion led off the frame with a home run. A two-out single by Christina Linton in the fourth extended the lead to 2-0. The Wolves added three runs in the fifth, two on a single by Mallory Gerndt.
While Newberry was picking up 14 hits, Wolves hurler Devon Morrison (12-3) kept Catawba bats silent. She took a no-hitter into the sixth before it was finally broken up on a sharp single to left by Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) with two outs. Stinnard singled home a run and Delane Smith (Wake Forest, N.C./Wake Forest) singled home two more to make it 5-3.
Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston) connected on a two-out home run in the fourth to bring Catawba within a run at 5-4. Newberry struck for three in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead then Marion had a two-run homer in the seventh.
