Women's Lacrosse Battles Back to Knock Off Tusculum
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Catawba overcame an early 5-1 deficit to top host Tusculum 14-12 in South Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field. The Catawba Indians notch their sixth straight win in improving to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the SAC. The Pioneers fall to 4-8 and 2-2.
Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) scored three goals and handed out three assists to lead Catawba. Nicole Hunt (Pleasant Garden, N.C./SE Guilford) also scored three goals for the Lady Indians. saves.
After Gianna Pezzulo (Henneker, N.H/Cushing Academy) scored in the opening minute, Tusculum reeled off the next five goals. Hayley Barnett’s second made it 5-1 at the 16:24 mark of the half. The Lady Indians scored four of the next five goals, two by Kruse, to close within 6-5.
Down 7-5, Catawba scored three straight goals to take the lead with 1:22 remaining in the half on a tally from Hunt. Claire Stanton sent the game to break tied at 8-8 on her free-position shot with 44 seconds to go.
Catawba took control to start the second half, scoring four unanswered goals over the first 12 minutes. Nicolette Salay (Columbus, N.J./N. Burlington Regional) scored the first two with Kruse and Hunt ending the run. Savannah Elliott scored twice to pull the Pioneers within 12-10 at with 12 minutes left, but those goals were answered by Katie Barth (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) and Hunt to put the Lady Indians on top 14-10 with 3:08 remaining.
The Pioneers got a goal from Bartlett at the 1:40 mark and another from Madison Moore nine seconds later to get back within two. Tusculum won the ensuing draw control, but goalie Madison Anselmo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) caused a turnover with 1:13 left and Catawba was able to run the clock down to 20 seconds before the Pioneers were able to regain possession.
Pezzulo, Barth and Salay would each score twice for Catawba. Pezzulo added a pair of assists. Anselmo recorded seven saves and caused two turnovers. Hannah Scott (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne’s County) caused two turnovers and scooped up seven ground balls.
Bartlett and Rachel Holmes each scored three goals for Tusculum. Elliott had two goals and two assists. Brooke Wagner made nine saves.
Tusculum won 20 of the 28 draw controls, but Catawba had a 33-20 edge in ground balls and committed six fewer turnovers. The Lady Indians held a 29-23 edge in shots.
Catawba will next host Coker at Shuford Stadium on Wednesday at 4 pm.
