Softball Drops Doubleheader at Carson-Newman
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Host Carson-Newman claimed a doubleheader sweep of Catawba in South Atlantic Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at The Vick. The Lady Eagles improve to 25-7 overall and 6-0 in the SAC with 6-0 and 9-1 victories. The Catawba Indians fall to 9-26 and 2-4.
Allie Webster had two hits and drove in four as Carson-Newman shutout Catawba in the opener. She drove home the opening run in the second and added another RBI in the third. Her two-run single in the fourth gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
Catawba picked up just five hits, but had scoring chances, leaving a dozen on base. The Lady Indians stranded two runners in the first, fourth, fifth and sixth frames and the bases loaded in the third.
Laci Rinus (13-3) got the win for Carson-Newman and had three hits at the plate. In addition to allowing five hits, she walked five and struck out six. Webster (12-4) would pitch the game two win. She surrendered a run on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Rinus added three more hits in game two for C-N. Taylor Scott had three hits with three RBI and scored four runs. Taylor Martin (Salisbury, N.C./W. Rowan) had two hits for Catawba.
KaraLynne Levi put Carson-Newman up with a two-run double in the first. Grace Holland (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) drove in Catawba’s lone run of the day with a double in the second to pull the Lady Indians within 2-1. Carson-Newman got that run back in third then got four in fourth to go up 7-1. Scott’s three-run double was the big blow.
Catawba is next scheduled to host Coker on Tuesday at 1:30 pm.
