Ketchie Combines to Shutout Winston-Salem State
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Catawba pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the third and claimed a 2-0 win over host Winston-Salem State in baseball action on Tuesday night at BB&T Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 22-9, while the Rams fall to 16-12.
Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) led off the third with a single and went to third on a misplayed ground ball to short off the bat of Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury). Zach Almond (Richfield, N.C./N. Stanly/UNCG) walked to load the bases before Setzer scored on a passed ball. Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) added a sacrifice fly for the 2-0 margin.
While the Indians were being held to just three hits, Bryan Ketchie (Woodleaf, N.C./W. Rowan) was keeping the Rams at bay for six innings. He surrendered just two hits, walked none and fanned six in improving to 5-1.
Ketchie got relief help from Clay Young (Greensboro, N.C./Caldwell Academy), Connor Johnson (Rockwell, N.C./E. Rowan) and Bryan Blanton (Albemarle, N.C./Albemarle) in completing the shutout. Johnson fanned three in an inning and two-thirds, while Blanton allowed a single in posting his seventh save.
Setzer had two of the three Catawba hits and led off the game with a double. Almond had the other Indian hit which was a single in the eighth.
Ketchie sat down the first eight Rams he faced before allowing a hit to Willie McCrae. McCrae doubled to start the sixth, but Ketchie got the next three to end his night. Emilio Abreu singled to start the ninth off Blanton before the junior came back to get a flyout and a double play grounder to wrap up the game.
Catawba is scheduled to host Augusta this weekend for a three-game series that starts at 6 pm on Friday night.
