Football underclassmen defeat Hargrave Military
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba's underclassmen defeated Hargrave Military Academy 20-17 in football action on Friday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. Matt Gross (Hendersonville, NC) provided the winning points on a 19-yard field goal with 36 seconds to play. Gross, a senior, had tied the contest with a 27-yard kick with 6:28 remaining. Sophomore Bret Brown (Rose Hill, NC), who has worked out as a receiver this season, returned to his quarterback position to lead the Tribe offense. He completed 11-of-20 passes for 179 yards and ran for another 41 in the win. Catawba jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the opening half behind Brown and the running of former Hargrave star J.W. Petty (Kettering, MD). Petty dashed 50 yards for the game's initial score at the 7:53 mark of the opening quarter and finished with 104 yards.
After the Catawba defense held Hargrave on a missed field goal after a 14-play drive, Brown directed the offense on another scoring drive. Brown twice teamed with Brian Flynn (Lexington, NC) on big pass plays. The first was a 28 yard strike early in the drive and the second ended the march from 25 yards out with 12:03 before the half. Hargrave would get on the board late in the first half after Karibi Debe blocked a punt to give the visitors the ball at the Catawba 24. Two plays later, Derrick Bush scored on a 15-yard run to trim the deficit to 14-7 at the break.
Hargrave would capitalize on a Tribe fumble early in the second half to get within 14-10. David Blackwell connected from 24 yards out for the points. Another Tribe fumble would set up the go-ahead point for Hargrave. Dede recovered his second fumble of the day on the Tribe 16 and on third down, Darrell Mitchell caught a lateral and fired a scoring strike to T.J. Williams from 20 yards out with 11:28 left for a 17- 14 lead.
Brown would then lead Catawba on two scoring drives to pull the game out. The Indians faced a fourth-and-one before Brown kept around the end for a 27-yard gain to the Hargrave 12 that led to the tying points. On the final drive he converted a third down with a short pass to Brad McCrary (Lexington, NC), then on the next play the duo teamed up for a 35 yard play to the Hargrave 17 to help set up the winning field goal. David Burman (Edgewood, MD) picked off a Hargrave pass at midfield to seal the win.
