Early Spurt Leads Wingate Past Women's Lacrosse
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Wingate built a 6-1 lead over the opening 14 minutes and went on to take a 14-8 decision over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Bulldogs improve to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 8-4 and 2-3.
Brittany Andrews had three of the early goals for Wingate with Paulena Dempsey scoring twice to close the early barrage. Andrews scored the last of her seven goals to push the Bulldog lead to 12-4 with 7:39 left.
Catawba scored three goals over a two-minute span to claw within 12-7 with 4:41 to go, but Dempsey stopped the Lady Indian run with 4:17 left and added a final goal inside the last two minutes. She followed Andrews with four goals for the Bulldogs.
Catawba got two goals each from Erin Green (Stratford, N.H./Sterling), Nicolette Salay (Columbus, N.C./N. Burlington Regional) and Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep). Madison Anselmo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) made 10 saves.
Wingate held a 32-23 edge in shots and won 18 of the 24 draw controls. Wingate denied Catawba a goal off eight free-position shots.
Catawba travels to Erskine on Wednesday for a 6 pm contest.
