Softball Splits With LMU on Wagoner's Game One Walk-Off Double

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba and Lincoln Memorial split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Catawba Indians won the opener 2-1 on a walk-off double by Ashley Wagoner (Roaring River, N.C./E. Wilkes) with LMU picking up a 2-1 win in game two.  Catawba now stands at 10-29 overall and 3-7 in the SAC.  The Railsplitters are 20-15 and 3-7.

Catawba had scored off an error to grab a quick 1-0 lead after an inning of the opener.  LMU finally broke through against Lady Indian starter Brooke Walser (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) in the sixth, tying the game on Ashlea Hunter’s RBI single.

LMU had a chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh, but on Jennifer Moose’s two-out single to left, Taylor Martin (Salisbury, N.C./W. Rowan) threw out Allie Jones at the plate.

Grace Holland (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) was hit by a pitch to start the Catawba seventh and Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston) singled.  After an out, Wagoner doubled to left center to plate pinch-runner Beth Ann Martin (Salisbury, N.C./S. Rowan) with the winning run.

Walser upped her record to 7-11 with the win in the circle.  She allowed a run on seven hits with four strikeouts.  Jones and Ty-Kella Goins had two hits each for LMU.  Brianna Taylor (11-7) took the loss in relief after entering during the first inning.  She gave up just two hits, walked one and hit two to go along with two strikeouts.

Holland singled home a run to give the Lady Indians a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the second game.  LMU used a couple of Catawba errors and a sacrifice fly by Kristen McAndrew to go up 2-1 in the fourth.

Taylor made those runs hold up, allowing just one Catawba baserunner after the fourth inning.  She improved to 12-7 as she scattered six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

LMU had just four hits with Kaylee Cook (Kannapolis, N.C./Brown) and Walser allowed two each with a pair of strikeouts for both.  Cook (2-13) took the loss over three and a third innings.  Wagoner followed her game one heroics with two hits in game two.

Catawba heads to Lenoir-Rhyne for a 1:30 doubleheader on Tuesday.
