Men's Lacrosse Shut Down by Wingate

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Wingate, ranked 15th in NCAA II, held Catawba to a single goal in posting a 13-1 victory in South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium.  Wingate improves to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 6-6 and 3-3.

The game was tight through three quarter as the Bulldogs led 4-1 after neither team could score in the third quarter.  Wingate started to pull away with a pair of goals in the opening five minutes of the final quarter and put the game away with a four-goal spurt over two minutes that put the guests up 10-1 with 7:26 left.

Wingate scored in the first minute on a tally by Jeremy Sullivan.  That was the lone goal of the opening period.  Sullivan added a second goal four minutes into the second quarter.  It was 3-0 before Joe Barber (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) put Catawba on the scoreboard with 4:28 to go before the half.

Ryan Ormerod and Alex Llerandi each scored three goals for Wingate.  Sullivan had two goals and a helper.  The Bulldogs held a 45-29 edge in shots and won 11 of 15 face-offs.
Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) recorded 14 saves for the Indians.

Catawba travels to Brevard next Saturday at 2 pm.
