Softball Drops Pair to Mars Hill
MARS HILL, N.C. -- Mars Hill swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from visiting Catawba on Saturday night at Ponder Field. The Lions improve to 11-23 overall and 4-8 in the SAC, winning 8-0 and 8-2. The Catawba Indians fall to 10-33 and 3-11.
Sydney Elkin held Catawba to just three hits in hurling the five-inning shutout in the opener. She improved to 6-7, walking none and striking none.
Mars Hill went on top in the second on a two-run homer Krista Romine. Cassie Dahle added a RBI double to make it 3-0 after two. The Lions put the game away in the fourth as they pushed across five runs. Hannah Smith capped a stretch of four straight two-out RBI hits with a two-run double.
Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancey) got Catawba off to a lead in game two as she connected on a two-run homer in the first. The lead was short lived as Mars Hill answered in the bottom half, taking a 3-2 lead on a home run by Casey Stanek.
Taylor Lail capped a three-run second for Mars Hill with a two-run homer and Ragan Broome ended the scoring with a two-run homer in the fourth. Shelby Culler (3-6) picked up the win, allowing two runs off seven hits over seven innings. She walked two and fanned five.
Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston) and Leah Huggins (Hope Mills, N.C./Gray’s Creek) each had two hits for Catawba.
Catawba travels to Queens on Wednesday for a 2 pm doubleheader.
