Offense Stagnate in Baseball's 3-1 Loss at Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C. – Mars Hill scored three runs on just four hits and topped visiting Catawba 3-1 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Henderson Field.  The Lions improve 23-17 overall and 9-7 in the SAC, while the 29th-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 25-11 and 11-5.

Catawba opened the scoring as Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) singled home Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) with two outs in the first.  Setzer had led off the game with a single and was sacrifice to second by Jeremy Simpson (Cleveland, N.C./W. Rowan).

Mars Hill opened its first with three straight walks.  After a fly out, Hunter Merrill scored the tying run on a wild pitch before Christian Stampler put the Lions on top with a sacrifice fly.  The only other scoring came in the seventh when Gray McCurry led off with a home run.

Zac Brown hurled the complete game for the Lions to improve to 4-3.  He allowed a run off seven hits, walking one and posting nine strikeouts.  Russ Weiker (Albemarle, N.C./S. Stanly/Liberty) allowed just three hits, but did walk four in falling to 2-3.  Setzer had the only multi-hit game for either team with two hits.

The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 pm.
