Women's Golf Stands Ninth After Day One of SAC Championships
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Catawba shot an opening round 322 and sits in ninth place among the 11 teams at the South Atlantic Conference Women’s Golf Championships. The 54-hole, three-day tournament is being held at the 5,910-yard, par-72 Link Hills Country Club.
Madison Moore (Westfield, N.C./E. Surry) led Catawba on day one with a 77. The sophomore battled back from a double bogey on her opening hole to post a five-over-par total. Over her final 17 holes, Moore had four bogeys with a dozen pars and a birdie on the par-5 10th.
Jaime Cassell (Charlotte, N.C./Cox Mill) followed with an 80 that saw her also birdie the 10th to go along with nine pars. Victoria Hedrick (Lexington, N.C./C. Davidson) had a nice round derailed by a quadruple bogey on the par-5 15th. She rebound with three pars to end her round to shoot an 81.
Hedrick and Kaley Barts (Apex, N.C./Apex) each notched two birdies in the opening round. Hedrick had birdies on the 10th and the par-4 seventh, while Barts had birdies on the par-5 13th and the par-3 16th.
Lise Malherbe, of Lincoln Memorial, holds the first-round lead after an opening with a 71. She was the only player to break par with five golfers sitting two shots back. Tusculum leads the team race after a 298, leading Lincoln Memorial by two shots and Queens by four.
