Softball Loses Twice to Queens, Game Two in Extras
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Elaina Frantellizzi hit a walk-off three-run homer to complete a doubleheader sweep for Queens over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Park Road Park. The Royals won the games 7-0 and 9-7, in eight innings, to improve to 19-24 overall and 5-11 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians drop to 10-34 and 1-13.
Catawba looked poised to split the doubleheader, building a 6-1 lead after six innings of game two. Queens would rally to force extra innings. A single and walk started the Royal seventh and Ashton Whitaker made it 6-4 with a home run. A one-out error helped keep the inning alive and pinch-hitter Sabrina Martinez cashed it in with a two-out, two-run single to tie the game.
In the eighth, Catawba retook the lead. Leah Huggins (Hope Mills, N.C./Gray's Creek) doubled home tiebreaker runner Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy) to open the inning. Sydney Ditto was placed at second for Queens and immediately stole third. After failing to score on a fly out, Whitaker walked. Ditto was still at third after a fly out for the second out when Frantellizzi homered to end the game.
Catawba benefitted from a pair of Queens errors to take a 3-0 lead in the third. Taylor Martin (Salisbury, N.C./W. Rowan) singled home two runs in the fourth to move Catawba on top 5-1 and Shumaker homered in the fifth for the 6-1 lead.
Martin and Ashley Wagoner (Roaring River, N.C./E. Wilkes) had two hits for Catawba in game two. Whitaker and Frantellizzi had two hits for Queens. Courtney Pearson (14-14) got the win in relief. She went five and two-thirds innings and struck out four. Brooke Walser (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) was the loser for Catawba, falling to 7-15.
Queens scored seven runs on eight hits to take the opener. The Royals plated two in the third on a double by Kelly Winter. Queens broke open a close game with five runs in the fifth that was aided by a Catawba error. Sydney Ditto doubled home two before an error led to three more runs.
Evie Scott and Pearson combined on a five-hit shutout in the circle for Queens. Pearson got the win with four innings of relief. She allowed two hits with a walk and a strikeout. Scott surrendered three hits, walked three and struck out one. Brooke Sanford had two hits and scored two runs.
Walser took the loss for Catawba, striking out two over six innings. Four of the seven runs allowed were earned. Catawba left seven on base and hit into a pair of double plays.
