Softball Gets Split With Anderson On Shumaker's Home Run

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba came away with a split of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader with visiting Anderson on Friday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The Catawba Indians came back to win game two 9-7 after dropping the opener 8-0 in five innings.  Catawba moves to 11-35 overall and 2-14 in the SAC.  The Trojans are 32-14 and 10-8.

Catawba grabbed a 5-1 lead after the first inning of game two.  Six straight Lady Indians reached with one out.  Kristen Stinnard (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) got it started with one out as she doubled home Taylor Martin (Salisbury, N.C./W. Rowan), who had walked to start the inning.

Ashley Wagoner (Roaring River, N.C./E. Wilkes) singled home a run, Leah Huggins (Hope Mills, N.C./Gray's Creek) doubled one home and Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston) got a run in when everyone beat out a fielder's choice.  Grace Holland (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) singled home the final run.

Anderson closed within 5-3 in the third then took the lead on a grand slam by Mattie Hamilton in the fourth.  The Trojans started the fourth-inning rally with two outs.  Kasey Grant and Meghan Majeski reached on infield hits and Cailah Niles drew a walk before the home run.

Catawba answered in the bottom half with a two-out rally of its own.  Beth Ann Martin (Salisbury, N.C./S. Rowan) and Stinnard reached on infield singles before Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy) put the Lady Indians on top with a three-run homer.

Brooke Walser (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) maneuvered around trouble in the fifth and sixth innings before sitting down Anderson in order in the seventh.  She struck out the final two batters in improving to 8-15.  Walser allowed nine hits, five earned runs, walked three and fanned three.

Stinnard had a three-hit game in the second game.  Beth Ann Martin had two hits and scored twice, while Huggins drove in two runs.  Niles had three hits for Anderson with Majeski and Hamilton each producing two.  Randee Bettis (6-4) took the loss in relief, tossing the final five innings.

It was all Anderson in the opener as Augie Pena threw four perfect innings before a leadoff single by Shumaker in the fifth, the only baserunner for Catawba.  Pena improved to 15-6 as she struck out five.

Three singles and a pair of walks led for four Anderson runs in the first inning.  Pena capped another four-run inning in the third with a three-run homer and finished with five RBI.

Catawba travels to Wingate on Tuesday for a 2 pm doubleheader.
