Volleyball falls in four at Wingate

WINGATE, NC -- Wingate University freshman middle blocker Rebecca Brezovec (Durham, NC) posted a career-high 14 kills as the Bulldogs defeated Catawba College 3-1 (26-30, 30-17, 30-22, 30-23) in South Atlantic Conference action Tuesday night in Cuddy Arena. The Bulldogs are now 10-4 overall and 2-1 in the SAC. Catawba drops to 7-6 and 1-2. In addition to her 14 kills, Brezovec tied her career-high with eight total blocks (four solo, four assists). Fellow freshman middle blocker Molly Kerns (Bellefontaine, Ohio) also had a big night with a team-high 15 kills and two total blocks. In the deciding game four, Catawba led 9-6 on a kill by junior hitter Heather Hawkins (Troutman, NC). Wingate answered with a 6-0 run to take a 12-9 lead on a kill from freshman outside hitter Danielle Thompson (Channelview, TX). The Bulldogs would not trail the rest of the way. Thompson helped push Wingate over the top in game three. She contributed a block assist and back-to-back kills to turn a 16-16 tie into a 19-16 Wingate lead the Bulldogs would not relinquish. Wingate led from wire-to-wire in game two. Hawkins recorded kills on three straight possessions to give the Indians a 27-25 lead in game one, leading the visitors to a 30-26 victory. Hawkins led Catawba with 14 kills. Indian junior hitter Crissi Harrison (Hickory, NC) added 11 kills and seven total blocks, while sophomore setter Nicole Scheidt (China Grove, NC) dished out 40 assists. Catawba junior hitter Crystal Bonner (Yadkinville, NC) led the defense with 21 digs. Thompson had 11 kills and a team-best 22 digs for the hosts. She added four total blocks and three service aces. Baltimore had 21 digs from her libero position. Wingate sophomore setter Sarah Godec (Euclid, OH) had 59 assists. #####
