Late Rally Falls Short as Softball Drops Two at Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. -- Wingate took both games of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader with visiting Catawba on Tuesday afternoon at the WU Softball Complex. The Bulldogs won by the scores of 2-0 and 5-4 to improve to 25-21 overall and 10-8 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 11-38 and 2-16.
Catawba nearly rallied to win game two. Down 5-1, the Lady Indians got within a run on a three-run homer by Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, N.C./Bartlett Yancy). Following a second out, Caroline Turner (Kenly, N.C./N. Johnston) doubled to put the tying run on second. After a hit batter, Grace Holland (Thomasville, N.C./Ledford) lined out to short to end the game.
Leah Huggins (Hope Mills, N.C./Gray's Creek) doubled home a run in the first to give Catawba an early lead. Wingate erased the deficit on a two-out grand slam by Mary Claire Coyne in the second.
Rachel Weidner hurled a two-hit shutout for Wingate in the opener and improved to 13-10. She walked none and struck out eight. Brooke Walser (Thomasville, N.C./E. Davidson) allowed two runs on eight hits. She came back to toss two shutout innings of relief in game two on two hits.
Coyne put the Bulldogs on top in the third as she tripled and scored on a fielder's choice. Naomi Sapp added a RBI single in the fourth to double the lead.
Catawba ends its season on Saturday, hosting Tusculum for a 1 pm doubleheader.
