Four-hit Games by Smith and Fowler Lead Baseball Over WSSU
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba out-slugged visiting Winston-Salem State, topping the Rams 13-7 in baseball action on Tuesday night at Newman Park. The 23rd-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 31-12, while WSSU drops to 27-13.
Catawba got on top after Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) connected on a two-run homer in the first. After sailing through three innings, Catawba starter Russ Weiker (Albemarle, N.C./S. Stanly/Liberty) ran into trouble in the fourth.
The Rams opened the fourth with three straight singles then took the lead on a grand slam by Randal Ortiz. John Garcia followed with a solo shot and the guests led 5-2.
Catawba rallied back in the fifth to regain the lead after a WSSU error. Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) singled home two runs before a two-out, two-run double by Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) put the Indians ahead 6-5.
The Indians broke the game wide open in the sixth. Jacob Nester (Kernersville, N.C./E. Forsyth/Chowan) singled and scored on a wild pitch, Bowden had a RBI single and Smith had a sacrifice fly as Catawba went up 9-5. Fowler singled home a run and Hanes capped the seven-run frame with a three-run homer and it was 13-5.
Smith and Fowler collected four hits and drove in three. Bowden had three hits and three RBI. Clay Young (Greensboro, N.C./Caldwell Academy) picked up the win to improve to 4-0. He got the Indians out of the fourth and tossed a scoreless fifth.
Ivan Acuna homered twice for WSSU among his three hits. Landon Steiner also had three hits. Jordan Carlton (2-2) took the loss as he pitched into the fifth. Only two of the six runs he allowed were earned.
Catawba is scheduled to face North Greenville on Wednesday at 7 pm with the game being played at the home of the Greenville Drive.
