SALISBURY, N.C. -- Hunter Shepherd (Salisbury, N.C./Homeschool) threw seven shutout innings and 23rd-ranked Catawba stayed in a tie for first place in the South Atlantic Conference with a 14-0 win over visiting Brevard in baseball action on Friday night at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians improve to 33-12 overall and 17-5 in the SAC.  The Tornados fall to 10-34 and 3-19.

Catawba took the lead in the first and never looked back.  Zach Almond (Richfield, N.C./N. Stanly/UNCG) and Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) singled home runs before an out was recorded.  Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) singled home two runs to cap the early outburst the put the Indians up 4-0 after one frame.

Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) hit is team-leading 15th home run, a two-run shot, in the second and a pair of unearned runs in the third made it 8-0.  The Indians wrapped it up with a five-run fifth.

Shepherd, now 7-0, kept the Tornados off the board, getting out of an early second and third jam in the first with a strikeout and a ground out.  He scattered six hits over his seven innings, walking two and striking out six.

Setzer produced three hits, needing just a double for the cycle.  He had three RBI and scored four runs.  Almond and Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) joined the junior with three hits.  Brayden Morris and Joseph Nelms collected two hits for Brevard.

The teams will conclude the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at noon.  Catawba will honor its seniors prior to game one and will recognize its 1992 conference championship team that went a perfect 21-0 in SAC play between the doubleheader.
