HICKORY, N.C. -- Catawba put up a strong upset bid of fourth-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne before falling 14-13 in South Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Moretz Stadium.  The Bears improve to 12-1 overall and 8-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 8-7 and 4-4.

Catawba took a 12-11 early in the fourth quarter on Colin Beecham’s (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton) tally with 11:09 left.  The Bears tied it with 8:34 to go then went ahead with 7:30 remaining on a goal from Ben Corrigan.

Lenoir-Rhyne moved ahead 14-12 just over 30 seconds later on a goal from Eric Dickinson.  The Indians scored a man-up goal from Dalton Cook (St. Augustine’s, Fla./Bartram Trail) to trim the margin back to one goal with 4:57 left.

LR won the ensuing possession and ran the clock under two minutes before Catawba got a chance to tie.  Joe Barber’s (Upper Marlboro, Md./Bishop McNamara) shot with 52 seconds left was saved, but Catawba got the ground ball.  The Indians were not able to get off another shot as LR forced a turnover in the dying seconds.

Catawba had jumped on top early.  Reid Lichtenberger (Austin, Texas/Vandergrift) had the Indians up 4-2 in the second quarter and a Liam Lynch (Marietta, Ga./Pope) tally capped a three-goal run that put Catawba up 7-4 with 4:21 left in the half.

The Bears scored twice to end the half then added two to start the third quarter to go up 8-7.  The teams went back-and-forth the rest of the quarter with Catawba holding an 11-10 lead with a period to play.

Lynch led Catawba with four goals.  Cook added two goals with a pair of assists.  Beecham and Cole Fanzo (Crofton, Md./S. River) both had two goals.  Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) recorded 21 saves.

Dickenson and Mike Hanlon put in four goals for the Bears.  Dickinson added two assists.  Joe Buduo scored twice, while Ryan Bell had a goal and three helpers.

The Bears led 56-33 in shots and 21-8 in ground balls.  LR also won 27 of 30 face-offs.

Catawba will travel to Queens on Tuesday for the opening round of the SAC Tournament.  The Indians are the fifth-seed in the tournament.
