Women's Lacrosse Knocked Out of SAC Tournament
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Lenoir-Rhyne used a late first-half run and claimed a 14-10 win over host Catawba in the first round of the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Women’s Lacrosse Tournament on Tuesday night at Shuford Stadium. The win improves the Bears to 11-7 and advances LR into Friday’s semifinals. The Catawba Indians have their best season to date come to an end at 13-5.
Becky Frost (Crofton, Md./Arundel) had tied the game for Catawba at 3-3 with 3:37 to go in the half when the Bears responded with five goals over the final three minutes. Kaley Harris and Frances Williams scored to make it 5-3 then Gabby Sousa scored three goals in the final 1:24, including two in the final 12 seconds for an 8-3 lead at the break.
Catawba got back in the game with three goals to start the second half. Nicolette Salay (Columbus, N.C./N. Burlington Regional) had two of the tallies to make 8-6 with 23:44 left. The Lady Indians had several possessions to cut the margin to a single goal, but were denied.
Torrey Schwitkis swung momentum back to Lenoir-Rhyne as she scored back-to-back in a span of a minute to put the Bears up 10-6 with 16:14 left. The Lady Indians made a late run with three goals in the final 1:52, but the deficit was too much to make up.
Imani Grays (Greensboro, N.C./SE Guilford) led the Lady Indians with three goals. Salay added two goals, while Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) had a goal and two assists.
Schwitkis picked up six goals with two assists to pace Lenoir-Rhyne. Sousa produced four goals and two assists.
