Women's Soccer posts sixth shutout with 1-0 win at Newberry

NEWBERRY, SC – Catawba College got a goal in the final 15 minutes and defeated host Newberry 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon at the Newberry Soccer Complex. The Lady Indians improve to 8-1 overall and 1-1 in the SAC. Newberry falls to 1-6 and 0-3. Solid goalkeeping by Newberry’s Annemarie Peterson (Lake Grove, NY) kept Newberry in the match. She made nine saves, including a penalty kick try with the game still scoreless in the second half. Catawba reserve Leigh Telzrow (Dallas, TX) finally broke the ice in the 76th minute. The teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half. Both teams had opportunities, but outstanding defense and a few luck bounces kept the match without a goal in the first period. In the second half, Catawba turned up the heat, getting six of its ten shots in the latter period. The game looked to swing Catawba's way in the 61st minute, when Catawba's Jamie Fink (Woodbridge, VA) was awarded a penalty kick, but Peterson came up big to keep the game scoreless. The teams battled again for a score until the 76th minute, when Jen Lowe (Enfield, CT) served a corner kick into the box where Telzrow punched it in through traffic for the game's only goal. Newberry worked the ball down into the Catawba zone, but came away with only one shot on goal in the second half. That shot, a direct kick by junior defender Sabrina Terry (Charleston, SC) was the only save of the game for Catawba keeper Catherine Balentine (Charlotte, NC). Newberry had several shots sail wide of goal in their attempts to tie the match.
