Setzer Homers Twice in Loss to USC Aiken
AIKEN, S.C. -- USC Aiken rapped out 13 hits and topped visiting Catawba 8-2 in baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Hernandez Stadium. The Pacers, ranked 15th in NCAA II, improve to 38-11. The 22nd-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 37-15.
Catawba managed just four hits in the loss. Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) provided the runs for the Indians with a pair of solo home runs. Setzer led off the game with an opposite field shot to right then connected on his team-leading 18th to left in the third.
Setzer’s second home run pulled the Indians even at 2-2, but the Pacers scored twice in the bottom of the third. Luke Westerberg and Mitchell Price opened the third with back-to-back doubles to give USCA the lead for good. Price later scored on an error and capped the scoring with a two-run single in the sixth.
Joseph Benitez (11-2) tossed seven innings to grab the win. He surrendered three hits, walked one and struck out 10. Nick Yobbi pitched two scoreless innings, giving up a hit with a walk and one strikeout.
Conner Johnson (Rockwell, N.C./E. Rowan) fell to 7-2 with the loss for Catawba. He allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits over five and a third innings. He posted three strikeouts. Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) had the other two hits for the Indians.
Price went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs to pace USC Aiken. Jose Bonilla also had three hits and drove in a run. Skylar Mercado and Tyler Ammerman both had two hits and a RBI.
Catawba will await a potential at-large berth in the NCAA II Southeast Regional. The field, consisting of seven teams in each of the eight regions, will be announced on May 14. The Indians were fourth in last week’s poll.
