Women's Soccer Announces Recruiting Class

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Nick Brown, Catawba Head Women’s Soccer Coach, has announced his incoming class for the 2017 season which is set to get underway on September 1 against the University of Missouri-Saint Louis. The eight new players joining the current squad for the upcoming season are Abbie Bensted (Bayford, England/Simon Balle), Anna Boda (Waxhaw, N.C./Parkwood), Brooke Freeman (Mooresville, N.C./S. Iredell), Amber Hand (Kernersville, N.C./Glenn), Madysen Peck (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley), Abbie Rainwater (Statesville, N.C./Statesville), Hannah Ryan (Melbourne, Australia/Ivanhoe) and Jovana Sanchez (Hickory, N.C./Hickory).

“Adding new players to our Catawba Family is always exciting for us,” said Brown. “We are really excited about adding these eight young ladies to the absolutely incredible group that we already have here. I think each individual is a good player and will contribute to what we are trying to do, but more importantly, we are bringing in eight individuals with high character who will fit in nicely with the returners that we have.”

Bensted, a forward, played club for the Tottenham Hotspurs Ladies and Reserves. She helped the reserves to a Southern Division Championship and were the Premier League Reserve Cup Winners. The Hotspurs won the Boux Avenue Cup.

Boda, a center mid, played club for WCWAA.  At Parkwood, she earned all-conference and all-region honors all four years, while taking home All-State honors her final three seasons. Boda was a two-time conference MVP and helped the Rebels to a pair of conference championships.

Freeman is a holding midfielder from South Iredell High School. The four-time all-conference selection was the region, conference and county Player of the Year as a senior. Freeman was a three-time all-region and two-time All-State selection. As a member of the Carolina Rapids Soccer Club, she won three NC Cup Championships.

Hand, a forward, scored 36 goals and added 26 assists in earning all-conference and all-region honors three times. She was an All-State pick in 2016 and was the Offensive Player of the Year. Hand played club for the Piedmont Triad FC.

Peck is a forward that started four years for Sun Valley. She played club for Charlotte United and the Carolina Rapids.  She helped her club qualify for the NPL Champions Cup by winning the NPL South Atlantic League.

Rainwater, a defender, is a two-time MVP and was the Statesville Athlete of the Year. She was a two-time all-region selection and earned all-conference honors as a senior. Rainwater played for the Lake Norman Soccer Club.

Ryan is a center mid and plays for the Southern United FC in the Victorian Women’s National Premier League. She has played in several National Championships, including the Las Vegas Mayors Cup and the Fiji International. She helped Heidelberg United FC to a Cup title in 2016.

Sanchez, a center mid, is a four-time all-conference and all-region performer.  She was named All-State in 2017 and played in the East-West All-Star Game.  Sanchez played club for CVYSA and the Carolina Rapids winning three State Club Championships.

“Our ultimate goal,” stated Brown, “is to improve upon the success that we had last year both on and off the field. In order to do that, we had to recruit people who could come in and help out on the field, but could also have a positive impact in the locker room and in the classroom. I am so happy that each of these young ladies chose to come to Catawba and I can’t wait until August for them to arrive on campus and join our program.”
