Juergens Named Men's and Women's Tennis Coach
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba College Director of Athletics, Larry Leckonby, has announced the hiring of Chris Juergens as Head Coach for Men’s and Women’s Tennis. Juergens returns to his alma mater after serving as a private tennis instructor since 2011.
“We are excited to have someone with Chris’ background as our Head Tennis Coach,” said Leckonby. “When we started this search, one of our top priorities was to find someone who could help improve our players technically and in terms of tennis strategy. Chris seems to fill this role perfectly.”
A 1996 Catawba graduate, Juergens earned a degree in physical education. After graduation, Juergens was an assistant tennis pro at the Robbie Smith Tennis Academy and the Cardinal Country Club. In 1999, he joined the Lawndale Swim & Tennis Club as the Director of Tennis.
Juergens moved to the Ridgewood Swim & Tennis Club as Director of Tennis in 2000 and became Co-Manager in 2003 and General Manager in 2006. Juergens directed overall facility operations and tennis programs for a club membership of about 400 families. He developed and implemented tennis programs for ladies, men and juniors from beginner to advanced levels.
Juergens became an Etcheberry Certified Coach in 2011 as he moved into a role as a private instructor. He provided comprehensive individual and group lessons to advanced juniors and adult players.
“It is an absolute pleasure to be back at Catawba,” stated Juergens. “I look forward to leading the Catawba Indians Tennis teams.”
Juergens played four years at Catawba, going 48-25 in singles action and adding another 30 wins in doubles. His 19 wins as a senior was a school record at the time and still stands as the sixth-best total for singles wins in a season.
Juergens and his wife, Kimberly, reside in Summerfield, N.C. They have a daughter, Carter (17), and four sons; Tyler (14), Samuel (13), Michael (11) and Andrew (8).
