Catawba falls short at I-AA 14th-ranked WoffordSPARTANBURG, SC -- Catawba, ranked eighth in NCAA II, fell to host Wofford, ranked 14th in NCAA I-AA, 28-3 in football action at Gibbs Stadium on Saturday night. The Terriers cashed in a pair of Tribe turnovers in the opening half and improved to 3-1. Catawba fell to 3-1. The Indians opened the game with 16-play drive that reached the Wofford 16-yard line, but just as last week, Catawba would not score after a turnover. Luke Samples was intercepted at the five by Jim Thurman to keep the game scoreless. The Terriers would then march the 96 yards in 15 plays to take a 7-0 lead with just 47 seconds left in the opening quarter. A key fourth down conversion at the Terriers’ own 33 kept the drive alive. Catawba would be pinned inside its own five after on its next drive after a three penalties and Samples would again by intercepted by Thurman. Wofford wasted little time, going the nine yards in two plays, recovering its own fumble at the two on the first play. The Indians would continue to move the ball the rest of the game, but were unable to cash in until the fourth quarter. Early in the second, Catawba was denied on fourth down at the 39 and failed to convert on a 46-yard field goal attempt in the final minute of the half. The game was delayed a little over 45 minutes with five minutes left in the half by lightening. Wofford used another long drive, a 15-play, 80-yard march to open the second half and take a 21-0 lead. Catawba’s first drive of the second half ended at the Terrier 19 after another tough spot on a fourth down try. The Tribe defense held the Terriers to a pair of three and outs and Allan Rohrbaugh would connect on a 39-yard field goal with 10:53 remaining to avoid the shutout. Wofford would answer the score with a touchdown and Samples was intercepted at the Terrier 25 on the Indians final possession. Wofford totaled 329 yards to 296 for Catawba, but had no turnovers compared to three for the Tribe. Aaron Johnson led the Terrier ground attack with 92 yards as Wofford had 313 yards rushing.
