SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba rolled to a 49-0 season-opening win over visiting St. Augustine’s in football action on Thursday night at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. It marked the opener for both teams.

Reid Carlton and Patrick O’Brien combined on five touchdown passes, three going to Sam Mobley, while Eamon Smart eclipsed the 100-yard mark as he ran for 107 yards on 20 carries with a touchdown. Kyle Kitchens led a smothering defense with three sacks.

The Catawba Indians scored on its first five possessions to build a 35-0 bulge at the break. Taking the opening kickoff, it took just three plays and barely a minute for Mobley to put Catawba on the board with a 42-yard pass from Carlton. It was a three-yard pass from Carlton to Mobley that made it 14-0 late in the opening frame.

The Indians took advantage of a bad snap on a punt to add a quick score early in the second as Smart cashed in with two-yard run. Carlton threw the last of his three scores midway through the quarter, hitting Keon West for a 29-yard touchdown and a 28-0 edge. Kenyatta Greene closed out the big half with a 19-yard scoring run.

O’Brien threw a pair of touchdowns in the second half. Mobley completed his touchdown hat trick with a 65-yard catch and run in the third quarter and Jonathan Chege scored from 26-yards out in the fourth. Lee Brackman was perfect on all seven of his point-after tries and boomed six of his eight kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks.

While Catawba rolled up 516 yards of offense, the Indian defense held the Falcons to 182 yards and posted seven sacks. St. Augustine was just 3-of-15 on third-down conversions. Josh Glisson was the highlight on offense for SAU as he ran for 110 yards on 17 carries and caught three passes for 35 yards.

Kitchens had three of the Catawba sacks with LJ Melvin, Jordan Hemingway, Isiah Huffin and Trey Evans each picking up one.

Catawba will return to action on September 9, traveling to face VMI for a 1:30 pm kickoff.
