Catawba Splits Matches on Day 2
SALISBURY, N.C. - - Catawba went 1-1 for the second day of the Catawba Volleyball Invitational at Goodman Gym on Saturday. Catawba’s first match resulted in a 1-3 loss to Belmont Abbey. Both Catawba and Belmont Abbey finished the Invitational 2-1.
Catawba started out slow in the first set, falling behind by nine. A kill by Rachel Stanford led off the comeback as Catawba went on 11-2 run. Macy Eidenberger scored the last point of the run with a kill to tie the game at 15. Allie Grubb and Morgan Hester both had kills during the run. Belmont Abbey broke the tie on an attack error and scored again on a Mackenzie Chrapliwy kill. Three consecutive attack errors for Belmont Abbey gave Catawba their first lead at 19-18. Belmont Abbey tied the game again but Catawba maintained the lead and finished out the set outscoring the Crusaders 6-1.
The Lady Indians scored the first point of the second set, but Belmont Abbey would answer with 5 straight points. Catawba never regained the lead, trailing by as many as eight a few times during the set. Belmont Abbey got Catawba off balance causing them to not be able to answer the attack by the Crusaders the rest of the match. Freshman Jade Brooks led Catawba with 7 kills. Eidenberger added six kills while Stanford dished out 22 assists and 15 digs.
The Lady Indians bounced back after the loss and swept Chowan 25-19, 25-18, and 25-13 in their second match of the day. Chowan went 0-3 during the Catawba Volleyball Invitational
There were four lead changes in the first set until a Chowan attack error tied the game at 15 all. Catawba took the final lead on a kill by Alexa Marcy. The Hawks put pressure on the Indians after a couple attack errors and a kill by Milica Vejnovic, but could not catch back up. Catawba scored the last four points on a kill by Stevie DeSimone, a service ace from Stanford, and two errors by Chowan.
Catawba scored the first point of the second set and maintained the lead with only one tie at 1-1. The largest lead was seven points and came at the 19-12 mark after two attack errors for Chowan.
The third set went much like the second with Catawba scoring the first point and never looking back. Catawba had a 9-0 run in the middle of the set on kills by Grubb and Eidenberger and a service ace by Allison Benton.
Marcy and DeSimone led the team with 7 kills each. Grubb and Eidenberger added 6 kills and Kimberly Hurtado added 5. Morgan Hester and Rachel Stanford handed out 17 and 12 assists respectively. Allison Benton contributed 15 digs, 1 kill, and 1 ace.
The Lady Indians return to action next Friday, September 8 at Winston-Salem State University.
