Kitchens Picked as SAC Defensive Player of Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) -- The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf SAC Football Players of the Week for games the first week of the season. Catawba linebacker Kyle Kitchens was named the Defensive Player of the Week, while Mars Hill quarterback David Salmon was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week. Wingate return man BJ Muckelvene picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Kitchens, a senior from Decatur, Ga., recorded three sacks in Catawba’s 49-0 win over St. Augustine’s on Aug. 31. The preseason All-American also added four tackles for loss in the contest. His three sacks put St. Augustine’s in a 19-yard hole, while his four tackles for loss backed the Falcons up 20 yards. The award marks his first Defensive Player of the Week selection this season.
Salmon, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Lions to a 40-14 win over Shorter on Sept. 2. He connected on 17-of-24 passes to finish the contest with a completion percentage of 70.8 percent and an efficiency rating of 202. Salmon also posted an average of 10.7 yards per completion, including a connection of 61 yards. The honor marks his first Offensive Player of the Week nod this season.
Muckelvene, a sophomore from Waxhaw, N.C., returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown to help the Bulldogs to a 38-18 win over Johnson C. Smith on Sept. 2. Muckelvene compiled 137 all-purpose yards for Wingate as he added 55 rushing yards and nine receiving yards. The pick marks his first Special Teams Player of the Week plaudit this season.
