Catawba Opens SAC Play with Win Over Mars Hill
MARS HILL, N.C. - - The Catawba Lady Indians opened their South Atlantic Conference play with a 3-1 win over the Mars Hill Lions at Stanford Arena. Catawba defeated Mars Hill 25-21, 25-23, 20-25, and 25-19 to improve to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 1-5 and 0-3 in the SAC.
There were eight lead changes during the first set until Catawba broke the 21 all tie and scored the last four points of the set unanswered. Jade Brooks and Allie Grubb led the Lady Indians with four and three kills respectively. Abby Benton added two kills and seven digs.
The Lions jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the second set but Catawba answered with kills by Micah Ensor, Kimberly Hurtado, Brooks, and Grubb to tie it at six all. The Lady Indians fought off the Lions and broke the 23 all tie and scored the last two points to take the set. Grubb led the offense again in the second set with four more kills. Rachel Stanford and Brooks each added three kills for Catawba.
Despite the fight by the Indians tying the score five times, they surrendered the third set to Mars Hill. Macy Eidenberger, Hurtado, Grubb, and Ensor all recorded two kills for the Indians. Stanford and Brooks each added a kill to complete the 10 kills of the set.
Catawba gained an early lead in the fourth set on kills from Brooks and Grubb. Mars Hill put pressure on Catawba tying the set at eight and keeping it close until the Indians broke away at a 14 all tie. After the final tie, Catawba outscored Mars Hill 11-5 to finish out the set and win the match. Brooks had seven kills and Grubb added five in the fourth set.
Brooks and Grubb led the Indians offensively with match highs of 15 and 14 kills. Stanford gave out 39 assists and added 27 digs. The defense was led by Allison Benton’s 34 digs along with Abby Benton recording 22.
Catawba continues SAC play tomorrow, Saturday, September 16 at home in Goodman Gymnasium at 2 pm as they host Tusculum College.
