Sanchez Scores Twice to Lift Women's Soccer to Win Over Mars Hill
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba got a pair of goals from freshman Jovana Sanchez and topped visiting Mars Hill 4-0 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday night at the Frock Soccer Complex. Catawba opens league play with a win, moving to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The Lions fall to 1-4-1 and 0-2.
Sanchez started the scoring in the 12th minute when Catawba was awarded an indirect kick in the box. Logan Sandate pushed a ball to Sanchez, who sent a shot from the middle of the box in for the goal. The Lady Indians drew a penalty kick in the 24th minute and Bailey Howell converted from the spot to give Catawba a 2-0 halftime lead.
Catawba held a 19-8 edge in shots and tallied two more goals in the final half. Freshman Abbie Bensted scored from a tough angle to the right of the goal that just fitting inside the near post. Sanchez capped the scoring with a shot from 20 yards out on the left side that found the upper back corner.
Shelby Thompson made three saves in posting the shutout in goal for the Lady Indians. Kaitlyn Danglemaier stopped seven shots for Mars Hill.
Catawba is back in action on Wednesday as the Lady Indians travel to Newberry for a league match that kicks off at 5 pm.
