Volleyball Swept at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, T.N. - - Catawba Lady Indians were swept in their South Atlantic Conference match against Carson-Newman Saturday evening. Catawba drops to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the SAC, while Carson-Newman improves to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

Catawba took the lead of the first set on a kill by Allie Grubb after a 21 all tie. A service ace by Grubb and a Micah Ensor kill put the Lady Indians on top 24-21. A Catawba error allowed Carson-Newman to tie the set at 24. Marnie Streeter got a kill for the Eagles to put them ahead and an Indian error gave Carson-Newman the set 26-24.

A service ace by Morgan Hester tied the second set at 24. Two kills and two errors by Streeter got the set to 26 all. Catawba was unable to score again dropping the set 26-28.

The Eagles took an early lead in the third game leading by as much as nine. The Indians made a large push at the end in an attempt to come back scoring seven in a row while holding Carson-Newman at 24. Catawba’s pressure was not enough and the Eagles ended the match with a 25-20 win.

Kimberly Hurtado had nine kills to lead the Indian’s offense. Jade Brooks and Grubb each added seven kills for Catawba. Hester dished out 20 assists with Rachel Stanford adding 12 along with five kills. Allison Benton tallied 20 digs for the Indians.

Catawba returns home for the first of a three game home stretch on Tuesday as they host Anderson at 6 pm in Goodman Gymnasium.
