Football Falls at Carson-Newman
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Carson-Newman ran for 333 yards in knocking off 23rd-ranked Catawba in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Burke-Tarr Stadium. The Eagles improve to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 4-1 and 1-1.
Josh Dillingham led the CN ground game with 145 yards and scored on a back-breaking 65-yard run late in the third quarter that put the Eagles up 28-10. The Indians got a late score on an 86-yard pass from Patrick O’Brien to Kenyatta Greene. A two-point conversion brought Catawba within 28-18 with 3:10 remaining, but CN recovered the ensuing onside kick and added a field goal with 1:27 to go for the final margin.
Catawba opened the game with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that was capped on a nine-yard pass from O’Brien to Eamon Smart. Carson-Newman came right back to tie the game on a 55-yard run by quarterback Derrick Evans. The Eagles took the lead for good on its next possession as Demitri Saulsberry capped a 41-yard drive with a one-yard run at the start of the second quarter.
Evans added a second scoring run midway through the second quarter to stretch the CN lead to 21-7. Lee Brackman booted a 23-yard field goal for the Indians before Dillingham’s long run.
Saulsberry followed Dillingham with 86 yards rushing for CN. Evans added 75 yards on the ground and went 2-for-6 through the air for 24 yards. Both catches went to Diantae Thomas.
O’Brien was 16-of-33 passing for 228 yards. He tossed a pair of touchdown passes and was intercepted twice in the final quarter. Smart had 63 yards rushing, while Sam Mobley had five receptions for 70 yards.
On defense, Trey Evans and Trevor Bembry were both in on a dozen tackles. Michael Peppers and Omar Staley had 10 stops. Cameron Davis had three stops for losses with Evans adding two. Montel Presley had nine tackles for CN, including a sack and three for losses.
Catawba steps out of conference to host North Greenville this Saturday at 1:30 pm.
