Men's Soccer Takes 1-1 Draw With Queens
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba and visiting Queens battled to a 1-1 draw in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday night at the Frock Soccer Complex. The Catawba Indians move to 1-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the SAC. The Royals now stand at 4-3-4 and 1-2-2.
The teams played through a scoreless opening period before Keegan Burton gave the Royals the lead with a shot from close range in the 49th minute. Around the hour mark, Catawba keeper Evan Jeckells kept the game a one-goal margin with a nice save. Just minutes after the save, the Indians equalized off a corner kick. Same Henneberg put a ball to the back post and Queens keeper Sergio Lemus could grab control, allowing Philipp Hollenhorst to push home the goal.
The game opened up over the final 20 minutes and overtime with saving tackles and outstanding keeper saves. In the first minute of overtime, Omer Green had a breakaway for Catawba, but Lemus stopped the one v. one. Jeckells was able to save a free kick from Queens at the top of the box to open the second overtime. The final change came with four minutes to play with Lemus just deflecting a chance by Jack Ragen.
Catawba held a 16-13 edge in shots with both teams taking 10 after the first half. The Indians held an 8-4 edge in corners. Jeckells made five saves for Catawba, while Lemus stopped seven shots for Queens.
Catawba returns to action at the Frock Soccer Complex on Saturday as the Indians host Carson-Newman at 7:30 pm.
