Women Win; Men Fall in Tennis Action vs. Mt. Olive

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba and visiting Mount Olive split wins in men’s and women’s tennis action on Thursday at the Johnson Tennis Center. The Catawba Indian women improved to 2-0 with a 7-2 win, while the men fell to 1-1 after an 8-1 defeat. It was the first dual match of the season for Mount Olive.

For the women, Catawba got off to a 2-1 lead after doubles. Sophie Hirsch and Isabel Benoit picked up an 8-6 win at #2 doubles to provide the lead entering singles. Mount Olive avoided the doubles sweep with a tiebreaker win at #1.

Catawba rolled to five singles win, highlighted by Erisa Onchi’s rally from a set down to win in three sets. That win got the Lady Indians within one victory of taking the match and it was provided by Kristen Rocko at #4.  Rocko had teamed with Emily Corcoran for a doubles win and Corcoran also claimed her singles match. Benoit and Olivia Wooldridge also claimed singles wins.

Mount Olive grabbed a 3-0 lead after doubles as Catawba was playing without its regular #1 and #4 players, who were out injured. Sam Schwarz claimed the lone win for the Indians at the #4 spot.

Next for the tennis teams will be a non-conference tilt with Newberry on Oct. 17 at 1:30 pm in Rock Hill, S.C.
