Miller's return, Nantz's aces help Volleyball to five-game win at LRHICKORY, NC – Catawba College claimed a five-game win over host Lenoir-Rhyne in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Shuford Gym. The Lady Indians recorded 14 aces as they improved to 9-6 overall and 3-2 in the SAC, winning 31-33, 30-23, 26-30, 30-24, 15-13. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 7-7 and 1-3. Catawba freshman Amanda Nantz (Troutman, NC) served a match-high five aces including one on match point, while setter Nicole Scheidt (China Grove, NC) lead the Lady Indians with 65 assists. Hope Miller (Newton, NC) returned to action for the first time in two week and led Catawba with 22 kills. Summer Zuck (Kingston, TN) and Elizabeth Hewitt (Newton, NC) totaled 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Miller added 22 digs, while Catawba's libero, senior Erin Naumann (Cave Creek, AZ) also recorded with 22 digs. L-R junior Rebekah Steinlin finished with a season-high 20 kills on 33 attempts with only three errors for a superb .515 hitting percentage. Steinlin tied teammate freshman Kathryn Phillips with two and half blocks (one solo and three assist), while the Bears' libero, sophomore Kelsey Baby totaled a team-high 19 digs. Leslie Hinkle recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 14 digs and also had a team-high three aces. Brandi Rickert and Michelle Lentz shared the setting duties totaling 33 and 31 assists, respectively. In game one, L-R jumped out to a 6-2 lead to force a Catawba timeout. The Lady Indians tied the game at 10 and later took their first lead since leading 1-0 at 14-13. L-R tied the game at 15 with an ace, and then the Bears took back the lead at 18-17. After Catawba hit the ball long three times in a row, the Lady Indians took their last timeout trailing, 19-17. Following the timeout, Catawba knotted the score at 19 and then again at 22. The game remained within one point until Rickert put L-R up 26-24. With L-R serving at game point, Catawba again tied the score at 29. Both teams traded serves until Steinlin's kill finally put game one in the win column for the Bears at 33-31. Catawba led early in game two, 6-3, and L-R later tied the score at 9-all. L-R again tied the game at 13, and a Hinkle ace gave L-R their first lead of the game at 15-14. The Lady Indians seized the lead back at 16-15 and then gained a 20-17 lead to force an L-R timeout. Catawba pushed their lead to 26-20 and didn't look back as they went on to capture game two, 30-23. The Lady Indians surged ahead in the third game and lead 12-5 early to make L-R call a timeout. The Bears closed to within 15-12. After a Catawba timeout, L-R knotted the score at 20 and then took their first lead since being up 1-0. L-R built a 26-22 lead and forced Catawba's final timeout leading 28-23. The Bears sided out twice in a row to win game three, 30-26. Catawba again jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the fourth game and then extended their advantage to 10-2 thanks to consecutive aces by Nantz. The Bears closed to within 15-11 on a kill by Hinkle that forced a Catawba timeout. Then L-R fought back to trail 16-13. But Nantz served Catawba to a 21-15 lead and the Lady Indians rolled to a 30-24 game-four win. L-R lead, 8-6, in the decisive game five as the teams switched sides. A Steinlin kill pushed L-R's lead to 11-8 to force a Catawba timeout. Catawba then scored four consecutive points to earn their first lead of the final game at 12-11. Nantz fittingly served an ace on match point to give Catawba the 15-13 game-five win and a 3-2 victory over L-R.
