Football Falls on Last Second Field Goal

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Freddy McCollum kicked a 27-yard field goal as time expired to give 24th-ranked Wingate a 27-24 win over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The Bulldogs improve to 6-0 and 3-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 5-2 and 1-2.

Wingate set up the final field goal after a 29-yard pass from James Whitaker to Malik Bledsoe to the Indian 10 inside the final 15 seconds. The final drive started after the Bulldogs forced a fumble at the Wingate 36 with Catawba driving for a potential go-ahead score.

Wingate controlled the ground game with 246 yards rushing to 81 for the Indians. Lawrence Pittman ran for 155 yards with Blake Hayes adding another 98. Each had a touchdown. Trey Evans led Catawba’s rushing with 34 yards on a fake punt. Eamon Smart totaled 25 yards and had a TD run.

Patrick O’Brien did Catawba’s damage in the air, completing 25-of-33 passes for 356 yards and a pair of scores. A 48-yard catch and run by Kenyatta Greene had tied the score for the Indians at 24-24 with 2:48 to play. Jourdan Osinskie made six catches for 74 yards and Keyon West had six grabs for 70 yards.

Whitaker went 12-of-25 passing for the Bulldogs for 168 yards. Bledsoe had three catches for 46 yards, while JT Stokes also had three receptions.

Wingate led 10-0 after a quarter. The Bulldogs scored on their opening possession with Pittman carrying in from six-yards out for the score. On its next possession, Wingate drove 75 yards and got a 31-yard field goal from McCollum.

Catawba trimmed the margin to 10-7 with Smart’s one-yard run early in the second quarter and tied the game just after halftime on a 22-yard field goal from Lee Brackman. The Indians took the lead later in the frame when Sam Mobley caught a 38-yard pass from O’Brien.

Wingate rallied, tying the game with 9:05 remaining on a three-yard run by Stokes. The Bulldogs retook the lead with 4:30 left on a 14-yard run by Hayes.

Evans made a dozen stops for Catawba on defense, including one for a loss. Kyle Kitchens had three stops for losses with a sack. Zack Singleton had a dozen stops for Wingate with Robbie Wallace adding 11 tackles.

Catawba is on the road at Tusculum next Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
