Volleyball Falls in Three Sets at Anderson
ANDERSON, S.C. -- Catawba was swept in three sets by host Anderson in South Atlantic volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. The Trojans won by the scores of 25-17, 25-13 and 25-21 to improve to 16-3 overall and 10-1 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 3-12 and 1-10.
Macy Eidenberger led Catawba with nine kills and had just one hitting error in 18 swings. Kimberly Hurtado posted four blocks with Rachel Stanford adding three blocks and had a dozen assists. Libero Allison Benton collected 12 digs.
Anderson got a dozen kills from Marissa Mitter and 11 from Jayln Knight. Mallory McFerron also reached double figures in kills with 10. Emily Conlin handed out 41 assists.
The Trojans began to pull away midway through the first set. With the set tied at 11-11, Anderson ran off 11 of the next 14 points to go on top 22-14. That carried Anderson to the set win which came on a kill by Serena Jackson.
Anderson rolled to a 14-4 lead to open the second set. Rachel Burts had three kills and a pair of blocks to spark the run. Jayln had a kill to make it 24-12 and also killed off the set point.
The Trojans ran off the first eight points of set three, but saw Catawba rally back with eight straight points of its own to pull even. A kill by Micah Ensor put the Lady Indians up 15-13, but four Catawba errors between a pair of Mitter kills saw Anderson go up 18-16. Catawba came within 20-19 on an ace from Morgan Hester, but Anderson scored the next five points and closed out the match on a kill from McFerron.
Catawba is at home on Friday as the Lady Indians host Mars Hill at 7 p.m.
