Men's Golf Takes 11th at Ross Intercollegiate
MORGANTON, N.C. – Catawba shot a final round 291, but stayed in 11th place among 13 teams at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate Men’s Golf Tournament. The three-round tournament finished up on Tuesday at the 6,718-yard, par-70 Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club.
Newberry ran away with the team title, topping Belmont Abbey by 29 strokes. The Wolves increased their lead with a six-under-par 274 on Tuesday. North Greenville’s Evan Gfeller had a 72 on Tuesday and held off three Newberry golfers for medalist honors with a 207 total. Ben Thompson had a final-round 66, but came up two shots short.
Catawba was led by Trey Burton, who’s final round 71 moved him up to 33rd spot with a 225 total. The best finish for Catawba came from Jesse Vensel, who played as an individual. He had a 72 on Tuesday to post a 221 score and place 21st.
This marked the final fall tournament for the men. Catawba will open its spring season on February 15 at the Spring Invite Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, Fla.
