Mercer Takes All-SAC Honors at SAC Cross Country Championships

NEWTON, N.C. -- Hannah Mercer ran to second team All-South Atlantic Conference honors on Saturday morning at Southside Park in the SAC Cross Country Championships. The women finished fourth at the Championships, while the men placed eighth among the 11 league schools.

Mercer placed 11th in the women’s 5k with a time of 18:37. That time took a second off her previous best time and is the second-fastest 5k in school history. Olivia Jacobs ran an 18:22 back in 2008.

"The girls really stepped up accepted the challenge to finish in the top four," stated Catawba Head Cross Country Coach Jason Bryan. "We were not at full strength, but they came together and ran hard for each other. It was a great performance. Hannah had a great day and really made a big statement withing the conference."

Hannah Wolkenhauer, of Queens, won the race in a time of 17:13, winning by nearly 40 seconds. Queens would also win the team title over Anderson.

Freshman Kyle Rhodes led the men with a time of 26:40 in the 8k. He would place 30th. Ethan Bemis was 35th in a time of 26:58, while Curtis Carmack took 37th as he finished with a time of 27:05.

"The men's race got out really fast and the guys hung in there for a while, but we did not have it today." added Bryan. Over the next two weeks we need to regroup and get ready for regionals."

Tom Bains, of Queens, won the men’s race in a time of 24:28. He won by 11 seconds over Carson-Newman’s Luke Greer. Queens had seven of the top 12 runners to win the team title over Wingate.
