Football Dominates Tusculum in 40-13 Victory

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Catawba scored 37 unanswered points after falling behind 6-0 to take a 40-13 victory over host Tusculum in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the SAC, while the Pioneers fall to 4-4 and 2-3.

After spotting the Pioneers an early touchdown following an interception, the Catawba defense dominated the contest. Catawba posted five sacks, 11 stops for losses, broke up five passes, forced three fumbles and recorded nine quarterback pressures. Tusculum managed just 199 total yards and had a mere nine yards rushing.

On the first play after an interception by Martez Tompkins, Tusculum went ahead on a 36-yard pass from Alex Ogle to Evan Altizer. The Pioneers two-point attempt failed. Catawba marched down the field on its ensuing possession and took the lead after Patrick O’Brien’s 33-yard scoring pass to Sam Mobley and Lee Brackman’s point after.

The Indians took control in the second quarter, scoring on four straight possessions. Brackman connected on field goals of 37 and 28 yards to push the Catawba lead to 13-6 then Jourdan Osinskie had a 21-yard catch and run from O’Brien for a 20-6 edge with 3:26 left in the half. Eamon Smart cashed in a Tusculum fumble with a two-yard run to make it 27-6 at the break.

Brackman opened the second half with a 23-yard field then Kenyatta Greene punctuated the win with a 78-yard run and a 37-6 margin. Tusculum broke its scoring drought midway through the fourth quarter when Ogle threw an 18-yard pass to Rodney Cruell. Brackman added his fourth field goal of the day to close the scoring, connecting from 35 yards out.

Catawba put two backs over 100 yards as Greene finished with a career-high 146 yards on 10 carries. Smart totaled 107 yards on 25 attempts. Both scored a touchdown. O’Brien completed 19-of-29 passes for 218. He overcame his early interception with a pair of touchdown strikes. Keyon West led the receiving corps with seven catches for 77 yards.

Dijonne Williams recorded nine tackles, was in on a sack, two stops for losses and forced a fumble. Kyle Kitchens posted his league high 10th sack.

Ogle completed 11-of-26 passes for 190 yards for Tusculum with a pair of touchdowns. Cruell and Evan Gates each caught three balls.

Catawba travels to Gaffney, S.C., next Saturday to take on Limestone at 1 pm.
