Catawba Falls to Lenoir-Rhyne
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Lenoir-Rhyne took home a 3-2 win against host Catawba in a South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer match on Wednesday afternoon at Frock Soccer Complex. The Bears improve to 11-4-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 6-9 and 3-6.
The match would start with Catawba getting the first goal from Erin Feldman in the 19th minute from a penalty kick. This was the lone goal for the first half.
Lenoir-Rhyne equalized early in the second half behind Helen Ramsey in the 52nd minute. A shot from Aqsa Mushtaq was blocked but it found Ramsey who capitalized. It was another rebound that gave the Bears the lead 10 minutes later.
It was again an attempt from Mushtaq, this time saved by Shelby Thompson, but the rebound fell to Hannah Van Earden, who put LR on top 2-1. The Bears added another goal in the 67th minute as Abbie Brown scored on a breakaway and tucked a shot just off the far post that deflected off a toe of a Catawba defender.
The Lady Indians got a goal back with just over a minute left when Abbie Bensted lofted a shot from about 30 yards over the LR keeper just under the crossbar. Catawba never got an opportunity for a tying goal as LR controlled the ball for most of the final minute.
Shelby Thompson totaled three saves for the Lady Indians. Alayna Morris had one save for LR.
Catawba will travel to Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at 1 pm to close out the regular season.
